Satoshi KAWAKAMI
Processors, the core of our information processing society, are reaching their limits in terms of high performance and low power consumption. On the other hand, advanced and complex applications such as big data and AI processing are exploding in popularity. We are researching innovative computing systems to close this gap and lead the world in creating a low-carbon information society. In particular, we aim to realize a computer for AI applications using innovative devices (optical/superconducting). We are also working on the invention of a zero-energy computing system that will revolutionize the conventional wisdom of computers. In collaboration with researchers both inside and outside the university, we will explore cutting-edge technologies across each technological layer (algorithms, architectures, circuits, and devices). If you want to challenge innovative computing research that is not bound by conventional technology! are welcome to join us regardless of the course of study.

The 21st century is the information age. However, this means that the accelerating informatization will consume an inexhaustible amount of electric power and communication bandwidth. This is where the “neural circuits,” the information-processing hardware of living organisms, come in for reference. Its resilience and distributed nature, refined through long evolution, are exactly what is required to build a sustainable society. In this laboratory, we will extract useful technologies from neural circuits and apply them to the next generation of information processing hardware. To this end, we will utilize circuit technology with high versatility and material technology that produces a wide variety of functions.
